The Institute (hereinafter referred to as Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics) was established in 1958 and moved from the former Institute of Petroleum, Chinese Academy of Sciences (now Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) to Lanzhou, where three research laboratories of catalytic chemistry, analytical chemistry and lubricating materials were established. The current name was put into use in June 1962.
